Child protection

A couple of articles have recently appeared in the media about forthcoming changes in the law with comments. Headlines and links as below:

"Parents banned from ferrying children to sports matches 27-06-2008 (The Telegraph)
Hundreds of thousands of parents will be banned from ferrying children to sports matches next year unless they have had criminal records checks, under new rules." click here

"Protecting kids is far from child's play 27-06-2008 (Guardian)
Thursday's Civitas report on vetting and child protection confirms what many have argued, including me, that child protection really is casting a dark shadow over the lives of today's children.

Have you noticed how on children’s television the presenters never actually come into contact with the kids? They beam at them like half-wits, while showing them how to build simple wind farms or recycling plants or mosques out of crepe paper and organic yoghurt pots – but they never touch them." click here

Report of the Youth B Europe Cup, Pilzen Czech Republic 3/4 May 2008

It was the first time three of the four South East athletes had competed against Eastern European Modern Pentathletes and probably not a competition to forget either! This competition was the first international for Catherine Lough and only the second for Alex Fraser and Ollie Robinson. However despite their lack of experience on an international level they all performed extremely well.

First event was the swim. Robinson, being the slightly weaker swimmer of the boys went in the first heat. He stormed the 4 lengths of the 50m pool to defeat his heat by a clear ten metres and set a new long course P.B. of 2.32. Next it was Alex who also finished with a long course P.B. of 2.17. Josh being the fastest swimmer of the British boys went last in the final heat and he finished with a time of 2.09.95. Which was a very good time considering the tough competition in his race. The winner of the swim went 2.03. A phenomenal time for any pentathlete even more so a 16 year-old. Catherine also swam a P.B. (2.21) and finishing as the 5th fastest girl in the swim.

Next event was the shoot. A favourite of Ollie’s but the least favourite of Alex, Josh and Catherine. Ollie showed clearly why it was his favourite event by shooting 171 out of a possible 200. The 2nd best score of his life. Alex and Josh performed well in the shoot finishing with good scores of 159 and 158 respectively. Catherine felt the pressure of the international competition during her shoot and scored 144. However having experienced this level it is she can cope better with the occasion next time.

The final event of the individual competition was the run. It was the first time the British team had experienced a Hungarian Handicap start where the leader of the competition before the run sets off first and the rest of the competitors follow in descending order according to how many running seconds (1 second = 4 points) they are behind the person in front. Josh set off first for the boys and ran a hard race tussling for first Brit home with fellow team mate Luke Tasker. This resulted in Josh squeezing in ahead by only 8 points. A few places further back in the field the two Whitgift athletes, Alex and Ollie, were also fighting for position but the winner of the two would get the final place in the British Team for the relay competition on Sunday. With 200 metres to go of the 2km race Ollie overtook Alex. But he was not going to be got rid of easily and the pair raced side by side. At one point it looked as though Alex might have the slight edge before Ollie exploded in a sprint finish for the line with 30 metres to go leaving Alex to cross the line 2 seconds later.

Due to Catherine’s poor shoot she started a little further back in the field than she would have liked but still ran hard and managed to climb a heap of places to finish 23rd in the girls competition. But she still went home with a prize because her run was enough to keep the British girls team in 2nd place finishing with Silvers Medal for Catherine, Alice Fitton (2nd) and Jodie Bruce (15th).

In the relay competition on the Sunday both the Boys and girls teams shot slightly below what was needed for a Medal position finish. Although the girls’ team ran the fastest time it was not enough to take third place.

Team Manager Stuart Mason MBE said that he was pleased with the results of the competition for the current condition and development of the team but work still needed to be done to remain consistently competitive with foreign competitors.
All the team had a really good time in Czech republic and have all come back more experienced and more enthused to continue the hard work so that they may improve on the results achieved at the this competition.

[Many sincere thanks to Alex Fraser for providing this report]

Guildford High School Biathlon 26 April 2008 - Report

Tara Oxley must have known that last Saturday (26th April) was going to be the best weather so far this year, when she chose the date for the first Guildford High School biathlon. Six schools competed in the biathlon, with sixty nine girls from years 5-8 competing. Schools attending were Guildford High, Tormead, Daneshill, Sir William Perkins, Holy Trinity and Rowan.

The run was held in the sun on the track just outside the fantastic new GHS sports centre, parents and teachers alike enjoying the sun, and the brilliant running. Fastest times of the day came in the year 8 age group with Jessica Filby and Poppy Disley-May both from Daneshill, clocking the same time of 3.33, in a very competitive finish.

The year 7 run was won by Lauren Sampson, (GHS) Year 6 Faye Rodgers (Holy Trinity) and Year 5 Sophie Rumble (Daneshill).
Best swim of the day was from year 7, Emma Adams (GHS), closely followed by Izzy Owen, year 8 (Tormead), Tilly Houston, year 6 (Holy Trinity) and Rose Griffiths, year 5 also from Holy Trinity.

The team event was also hotly contested, with Daneshill winning Year 5 and Year 8, Holy Trinity winning Year 6, with the host school Guildford High winning the Year 7 event.

This was the first event of its kind to be held at Guildford High, inspired by Tara Oxley and looks to become an annual fixture.
Also held alongside the competition was a taster fencing session which many of the girls took the opportunity to do, thanks to Steven Davey.
A shoot taster session will be held at the school on June 22nd. Contact Gill Measures.
Parents provided a wonderful lunch and tea, and most took the opportunity to picnic in the unexpected sunshine.
The event was run smoothly and ahead of time, due to Tara’s magnificent team of helpers, which included staff and pupils.
Well done to all!

Individual Results as follows;
Year 5;
1st Rose Griffiths Holy Trinity

Italian Open Championship 19/20 April 2008

Congratulations to Kate French and James Myatt. Kate won gold and James was best Brit in 9th place in a very competitive competition.

Kate French the over night leader on the final day had a small lead at the start (handicap) and managed to control that lead through to 2k keeping the challenge at bay. For the last 1000m the challenge subsided and Kate held her form and pace to cross the line 1st with a 18sec gap to second place. Kate's run time of 11.07 was 3rd fastest run. The girls team took overall silver and was marginally beaten by Poland 11672pts to our 11636pts

Highest placed GB boy overall was James Myatt running 10.01 and finishing in 9th place.

The UIPM website should show the full results for this competition later.

NW Region Biathlon Chamionships

Last weekend in Lancaster the NW held their Biathlon Championships.
Also added to this competition was a triathlon. For the YBs the triathlon was part of the selection process for the European Triathlon Champs. The score from this is added to the shoot score at the National Tet and the score from the National Biathlon which is then halved and a ranking list is achieved.

Athletes from the South East took part in these trials and have done very well. Whilst the selection process is not over yet, Josh Snow and Catherine Lough both North Kent MPC and Olly Robinson and Alex Fraser both Whitgift School have all put themselves within reach of a selection place. The final placings were:

YBBs 1st Ollie Robinson 3rd Josh Snow 5th Alex Fraser 13th Sam Curry

YBGs 2nd Catherine Lough

YCGs 6th Chelsey Eyers

To add pressure for the YB athletes the first four boys and girls were guaranteed a place in the Europe Cup in the Czech Republic in May. There is a possibility that the first 5 may go.
So Congratulations to Ollie, Josh and Catherine and fingers crossed for Alex.

Well Done to You All. Good Luck at Macclesfield

Report submitted by Bill Bland. Thank you.

Indoor Triathlon 2009

This festive event is hapening again next Christmas. In order to minimise the risk of a clash with selection comps. etc the date has been moved to Sunday 4 January 2009. Even this date clashes with a W Midland event but hopefully this will not impact on the entrries for either competition.

The venue will again be the RAA School at Reigate.

The format will once again be Shoot - Swim - Fence

In accordance with tradition you are invited to contribute to the festive fare so that the party goes on. If your resolution is to start a diet on 1 January this is a splendid oportunity to un-load all the lovely Christmas food that you have now denied yourself.

Whitgift Training Camp 17th-20th December

Whilst most of us were taking on calories like crazy,Christmas lunches, visting relations etc. the Whitgift Hyperactive A Team were on Dartmoor - training!!! Here follows the insiders report of what they got up to:

"At 8am the morning after Gill Measures' really fun end of Year Christmas Indoor Triathlon we bundled her into a Whitgift minibus and set off with 8 Whitgift Pentathletes to St Leonards Equitation Centre in Launceston, Cornwall for a 4-day intensive riding camp.

We were staying on the Yard at St Leonards in self catering accomodation which enabled the boys to live life on a working livery and riding yard. This meant a full on daily routine of being ready and on the yard to tack up at 7.40am to be on the horses at 8am for the first riding challenge of the day. The morning lessons entailed learning amongst other things shoulder-in, moving the horse from inside leg to outside hand, diagonals and canter leads and approaches and lines to fences

The afternoons session involved getting dressed up like an eskimo to take on the bleakest sections of Dartmoor on horseback for 90 minutes from Cholwell Riding Stables in Mary Tavy. It gave the boys the chance to practice things that they had learned in the school in the freedom of open moorland and to learn new things that are impossible to teach (ie if the horse runs off with you on the moor, the horse will run out of puff before you run out of moor, so sit tight!)

It was one of the most successfull training camps for the team at Whitgift as every boy improved dramatically after each riding session. The week ended with Andy Reeve the owner and coach of St Leonards taking the boys through building, walking and riding a show jumping course. We are now looking forward to more full pentathlon competitions in 2008. Many many thanks to Gill Measures for giving up more of her (im)Measure(able) time to help on the camp - you were great Gill.... but dont be the last one to tap dance.... "
