Riding Simulator Opportunity - 28 July and 18 August East Grinstead

With the national championships coming up at the end of August, I have been looking into some ideas to complement your riding lessons, and accelerate your skills. To improve core stability, posture, balance and rhythm, and developing 'feel', I have located a mechanical horse in East Grinstead, one of only a few in the country, which is run by a successful dressage rider.

These simulators are so advanced they are fitted with sensor pads which allow riders to work on their leg aids. There are also sensors in the mouth to allow the rider to work on the contact, and also has neck bend. This is invaluable to show the riders how to keep an even contact into each rein. Also to help with when the correct time to ask for a half halt which really affects the horses rhythm and balance as well as the riders. The simulator is able to correct riders without causing any distress to the horses and as they are mechanical go exactly as you ride them!! The room also has mirrors so you can see your position and correct it, so important to the horses way of going.

The Junior National dressage team use the simulator, also people from age 3-90!

I was quite impressed by the results on the two riders I watched, and have booked two days of sessions for those of you who may be interested. These are Wednesday 28th July and Wednesday August 18th. Hopefully this will give you the opportunity to attend at least one session, bearing in mind summer holidays.

Times will be 10am-last session 4pm, and will be for 30 mins at a cost of £30.
Please contact Gill Measures as soon as possible and before 15th July if you are interested, and I will let you know what to do next!

Hybrid Event Attracts Pony Club Children to Pentathlon

Top level performances and a relaxed atmosphere ensured that even the afternoon rainstorm during the run failed to dampen the success of the inaugural Ashford Friars Bring Your Own Pony Pentathlon on 29th May.

The vast majority of the 44 competitors were pony club children who were competing in their first fully-blown pentathlon and in many cases in their first serious fencing competition.

The goal of the organisers had been to create a hybrid competition that sat somewhere between a traditional Pony Club tetrathlon - which involves riding cross-country on your own pony, running, swimming and shooting – and a standard pentathlon format.

By allowing children to ride their own ponies, the uncertainty for children familiar with the pony club tetrathlon was restricted to the fencing. Many of the children had learnt to fence at the Ashford Epee Club over the past six months specifically for the competition.

The approach meant that the ride was more predictable than usual with riders scoring between 1,200 and 776 points. The average ride score was a relatively high 1,125 points across the main categories.

Other changes to the format were that the shoot for Youth E and D competitors was at pentathlon targets but from the pony club distance for their age of 7m and swimming was 80m. The Youth D and B athletes only shot 10 shots from 10m, swam 120m and ran 1,000m .

The success may encourage other regions to try this approach and may create a parallel introductory series of competitions around the country for junior athletes who already enjoy the pony club tetrathlon format but are reluctant to move straight into pentathlon.

One of the factors contributing to the enjoyment of competitors and their parents was the tight timetable with all events starting at 9.00 am and finishing at 4.00 pm with prize giving at 4.15pm.

Amongst the stand out performances in the younger age groups were Lucy Nicholas’s 5,080 points to win the highly competitive Youth D Girls class and elsewhere in YDG Kathryn Clarke’s blistering 55.94 sec swim over 80m and Natasha Brid’s 90 in the shoot earning her 1,048 points.

In the older age groups, Bobby Clay in YCG ran 1,000m in blustery rain swept conditions in an impressive 3.23 seconds, while in YBG Saskia Wickenden scored 1,024 points in the shoot and Ione Walker’s 1 min19.40 for the 120 swim earned her a massive 1,232 points.

The Ashford Friars BYO Pony Pentathlon was organised by Ashford Epee Club, Ashford Friars Prep School and Pentathlon South East. All events took place at Ashford Friars Prep School apart from the riding which was 200m down the road in the Blue Barn Equestrian Centre’s indoor arena.

SE Region Pistol Hire - some changes

In order to meet increasing demand for pistols the Region agreed at its AGM to buy more pistols. Two pistols will be bought straight away from Regional reserve funds. We need loan pistol income to contribute to new pistols and we are also investigating whether we may be able to get some external funding

It was therefore regretably agreed that as from 1st April 2010 the cost for loan pistols will rise to £50 for three months hire

The region has been very successful in shoot development days but is unable to meet the demand for loan pistols. On one hand we need to have the pistols available for development, but on the other we cannot expect people to rush out and buy a pistol after one lesson. The £50 loan fee, as well as covering Insurance and maintenance will also enable us to buy more pistols for the region. It is our aim to have pistols available for loan whilst retaining some for development.

If you would like to register for a loan pistol, please contact Bill Bland. You will need to be a current member of Pentathlon GB and have some known experience of shooting. Bill's contact details are bill.bland@btinternet.com Tel: 0208 300 5247 and/or 07956 652108
