What should a beginner wear for a triathlon?
Your First Triathlon
Typically, a first-time triathlete will wear a swimsuit for the swim with a sports bra or supportive swimsuit top underneath, and then pull cycling shorts on during T1 (first transition).
What is a tri kit?
A tri suit is something of a hybrid between swimming, cycling and running kit, designed to be slippery in the water, offer some padding on the bike and be comfortable and supportive enough for running.
What do triathlon athletes wear?
In a triathlon you want to wear what is called a triathlon suit or a triathlon kit (a top/bottom combo) designed to be worn in the swim, the bike, and finally the run. In other words, you do not take it off! With the exception of the wetsuit (if needed), you need not put on any other piece of clothing.
Do you change clothes in a triathlon?

You can opt to change into clothes specific to each leg of the race—or not. Some triathletes choose to do the whole race in a swimsuit for quicker transitions. Other swimmers simply pull on a pair of shorts before jumping on their bike. In general, tri clothing should fit snugly.

And it’s a real shame, because anyone, yes anyone, can do a triathlon. There really are no prerequisites for it. The only thing you need is some time to prepare. And it most definitely doesn’t matter that you don’t have a fancy bike and wetsuit, and shiny objects you see “serious triathletes” have.
Do you wear a bra with a tri suit?
The answer is no. You should not wear underwear (except a sports bra) under your trisuit in a race. Additionally, your underwear could retain water and counteract the quick drying properties of your suit.
Can you swim in just a tri suit?
The wetsuit will help you keep warm in the colder water, hence on warmer swims the use of a wetsuit may be prohibited – in which case, you just swim in the tri suit. So, in the UK the vast majority of open water swims and triathlon events will allow wetsuit use.

Do I need my own bike for a triathlon?
Yes, you will need a bike. No, it does not need to be expensive. We see people do triathlons on their old mountain bikes, hybrids, or other slower bikes — and especially with a couple simple modifications these bikes can do very well. If you can, try to use a road bike, even if you simply borrow one from a friend.
What do you wear under a tri suit?
Nothing. You don’t wear anything under a tri suit. They are built to get wet on the swim and dry quickly without weighing you down. They are built to be form fitting and supportive, for both men and women.
Can you do a triathlon shirtless?
If it is an ITU sanctioned race, or a race sanctioned by a body that uses ITU rules (as all provincial associations in Canada do), racing shirtless is explicitly against the rules.

They need to be both durable and breathable. They need to do well in the water as well as on the bike. Most triathletes who we know reserve their tri shorts for bricks (combo bike and run workouts) and race day, using swim jammers in the pool and cycling shorts on their longer rides.
