Minimum Gear for a Triathlon
- Bike Helmet. This one is a no-brainer, since all USAT-certified races (which is most of them) require the use.
- Triathlon Shorts.
- T-Shirt, or Workout Shirt.
- (for ladies) Sports Bra or Swim Top.
- Road Bike or Tri Bike.
- Cycling Shoes.
Can you use a road bike for triathlon?
A road bike will get you to the finish line of the triathlon just fine. It may not be as fast, but it’s not necessarily slow either. In fact, you can still be pretty competitive on a road bike with some solid training and coaching.
Can you use any bike for a triathlon?
For your first triathlon, any bicycle that you have access to will work fine. If a bicycle fits correctly, you’re more likely to enjoy cycling and find it easy to spend time riding. A good fit also reduces the likelihood of cycling-related injuries.
Do I need a wetsuit for triathlon?
Triathletes normally wear a tri suit during a triathlon. A tri suit is made of a thin athletic material and can come in one or two-piece options. Sometimes because of colder water temperatures, a tri suit is not enough and triathletes will opt to add a wetsuit to wear during the swim.
Why are triathlons so expensive?
So far, that leaves us with this: Traveling to races in the U.S. is expensive because it takes more time and more hotel nights should you venture across the country or up a mountain. In Germany, people happily flick $30 to race organizers for a sprint. (See: Ravensburger Triathlon, now in its 33rd year.)
What is a tri kit?
In a triathlon you want to wear what is called a triathlon suit or a triathlon kit (a top/bottom combo) designed to be worn in the swim, the bike, and finally the run. After the swim, you strip off the wetsuit, put on your helmet, and cycling shoes and are ready to go.
Do triathletes Pee on the bike?
On to the matter at hand – yes, some triathletes do, in fact, pee on their bikes. If it’s not obvious, triathletes pee while riding their bike so they don’t have to stop – saving precious time for competitive races.
Can you use mountain bike for triathlon?
One of the more common questions we get from beginner triathletes is if they can use their mountain bike, commuter bike, or hybrid bike in the triathlon. The answer is yes, absolutely – especially if you are doing a sprint or perhaps even an Olympic distance.
What kind of bike do I need for Ironman?
Road bikes are comfortable to ride as long as you get the right fit. They handle better and give a rider more confidence. They also give the rider multiple positions on the handlebars, which is important when riding 112 miles in an Ironman.
Are triathletes selfish?
Obsession – let’s face it, triathlon (and many other endurance sports) are solitary and can be selfish activities.
Do you need a tri bike for an Ironman?
You Don’t Need a Fancy Bike Seriously, you don’t need a snazzy triathlon bike to do well in one of these races. I passed a lot of Cervelo P3s and aero helmets on my road bike, a Trek Emonda I’d equipped with aero bars. I wore a regular helmet and normal jersey.
Can I use a gravel bike for triathlon?
The 700c gravel wheelset is the same dimension as to what you usually ride on your tri bike. Triathletes can use gravel riding as a great opportunity to grab some friends and go exploring without worrying about your pace or power- just enjoy the ride!
Can I use a normal wetsuit for triathlon?
You could wear a water-sports wetsuit for a triathlon, although you will find it significantly harder both during the swim and also getting it off in transition. A water-sports suit is likely to be enough of a hindrance that you won’t need to worry about being in the mix for the medals.
Can you drown with a wetsuit?
Yes. Surfers, scuba divers, kayakers, etc. have all drowned while wearing wetsuits. It’d be very difficult to sink while wearing a wetsuit, so the potential to drown is much lower. Just beware that the wetsuit may make you feel constricted which can lead to panic.
