What do I need for my first triathlon?
- Tri suit or swimsuit.

- Bodyglide (skin lubricant)
- Pre-race sandals or other footwear.
What should I put in my triathlon bag?
Helmet, Hat and Shoes And as silly as it sounds, don’t forget your shoes! This may be a pair of cycling shoes and a pair of running shoes, or one set of shoes for the bike and the run. No matter, remember to put both pairs in your bag the night before to ensure you are prepared.
What distance should my first triathlon be?
Go short before going long. Begin with a shorter sprint-distance event (400 to 500 yards of swimming, 11 to 15 miles of cycling and around 3.1 miles of running) or an Olympic-distance event (0.9 miles of swimming, 24.8 miles of cycling and 6.2 miles of running).
Do triathletes Pee on the bike?
On to the matter at hand – yes, some triathletes do, in fact, pee on their bikes. If it’s not obvious, triathletes pee while riding their bike so they don’t have to stop – saving precious time for competitive races.
Should I wear a wetsuit for my first triathlon?
In a triathlon you want to wear what is called a triathlon suit or a triathlon kit (a top/bottom combo) designed to be worn in the swim, the bike, and finally the run. In other words, you do not take it off! With the exception of the wetsuit (if needed), you need not put on any other piece of clothing.
Do you wear socks in triathlon?
Most pro triathletes don’t wear socks for sprint and Olympic distance events and are wearing some for longer events. However, over a full Ironman distance, it is rather insignificant. The comfort of socks over such a big distance is, for most people, well worth those couple of seconds.
How much should you eat during a triathlon?
Eating and drinking during events During Olympic distance and sprint distance triathlon racing, athletes should aim to consume between 30-60g of carbohydrate each hour. This can be achieved through a combination of sports drinks, carbohydrate gels and through solid forms of carbohydrate e.g. Sports bars or muesli bars.
What should you do the night before a triathlon?
Remain hydrated throughout the day, using water rather than sports drinks. Eat light, balanced meals containing carbs, protein, and a small amount of fat. Have an early lunch and eat your dinner long before bedtime. Stick to foods that your body is used to.
Can you backstroke in a triathlon?
Backstroke is rarely used during a triathlon, but it is a great stroke to incorporate into your training because it helps your shoulders unwind after sticking with one specific stroke for a while. Backstroke is extremely useful when you need a bit of a rest period or if the water is choppy on race day.
Should I start with a sprint or Olympic triathlon?
Sprint or Olympic Distance Rather than beginning your triathlon adventures with an Ironman, a sprint triathlon (typically around 500 yards of swimming, 11 to 15 miles of cycling and 3.1 miles of running) is a better choice for first- time triathletes.
Can you walk in a triathlon?
You can walk during the running portion of a triathlon, but please don’t “crawl.” In typical legalese style, the ITU defines crawling as “the action by an athlete of bringing three or more limbs in contact with the ground, either together or in any sequence, to enable forward propulsion” [source: ITU].
Why you should never date a triathlete?
Split personality. You could always go on one of their trips with them, if you fancy spending all day on your own while they are out cycling. However it is particularly dangerous to accompany a triathlete to a race because you run the risk of seeing the “other side” of your paramour.
Do you eat during an Ironman?
What and how much should you eat? As a general rule of thumb, endurance athletes should aim to eat 60-90 grams of carbohydrate per hour during IRONMAN events, with athletes typically able to consume more calories and fluids during the bike leg and fewer calories during the run portion of the event.
