What should I wear for the swim part of a triathlon?
- The one piece of kit that is fundamental for a triathlon is a tri-suit.
- You’ll also need goggles and a swim hat.
- For open water swim triathlons, the use of a wetsuit is usually mandatory.
- A cycling helmet is compulsory when racing and must be approved ANSI Z90.
Can I do a triathlon shirtless?
Male triathletes have the option of continuing shirtless for the cycling portion of the race, or putting on a shirt. Sunglasses are a good idea, and official triathlons require all cyclists to wear approved safety helmets for the duration of the bike ride.

Can you drown with a wetsuit?
Yes. Surfers, scuba divers, kayakers, etc. have all drowned while wearing wetsuits. It’d be very difficult to sink while wearing a wetsuit, so the potential to drown is much lower. Just beware that the wetsuit may make you feel constricted which can lead to panic.
